Red Cross Red Crescent leadership meet in Vienna to address urgent needs in Europe
Leaders of more than 50 Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, as well as the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent’s newly elected president, will gather in Vienna, Austria, from 13 to 16 April, to discuss humanitarian challenges faced throughout Europe. The 8th European Red Cross and Red Crescent Regional Conference will focus on four themes:
- The economic crisis in Europe and its impact on humanitarian action, what has been done and what needs to be done to ensure aid is not negatively affected by the ongoing crisis;
- Europe’s ageing population, beyond statistics what are we doing to address the complex challenge presented by increased risk of poor health, as well as the social and economic uncertainty many of Europe’s elderly face;
- Migration and the role of the Red Cross Red Crescent in promoting non-discrimination and integration;
- How effective humanitarian action can save lives and change minds. What the Red Cross Red Crescent societies in Europe are doing to implement our new global 10-year strategy.
The Red Cross Red Crescent will also report on progress made towards achieving the humanitarian commitments we established in The Istanbul Commitments as part of the 7th European Conference in May of 2007.
Journalists are cordially invited to the opening ceremony, which will be held at 14:00 on Tuesday 13 April, 2010, at the Hofburg, Michaelerplatz 1, in Vienna. Many interview, photo and video opportunities with participants are also available for the press during the week of the meeting.
