Due to armed conflicts and natural disasters such as droughts and floods, food supply in Ethiopia is precarious. In April 2008, the Ethiopian government announced that 4.5 million people were in urgent need of food aid.
The Austrian Red Cross, in cooperation with the Ethiopia Red Cross, distributes maize, beans, oil and food supplement to 40.000 people in the Wolayita region of southern Ethiopia. Furthermore, bean seeds and sweet potato cuttings are also provided in order to enable people to grow their own basic foodstuffs.
