In the year 1919 the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies was formed from the different national societies (formally ,The League of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies).
The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Federation) is tasked with motivating the national societies to act on relevant issues such as those of a humanitarian or peace promoting nature.
The Federation also coordinates the world wide aid response to natural disasters and emergencies of all types, and bring assistance to refugees from conflict zones.
As a result of this, the Federation often works in conjunction with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR).
Ultimately supported by the ICRC and the national societies, the Federation, seeks to further and promote international humanitarian law, and of course, Red Cross principles.
As the umbrella society of all the national societies the Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is an Organisation without affiliation to any particular State and has an international character
