Who we are
Alexander Öze
Alexander has worked for the Austrian Red Cross in WASH-related positions since 2005, both in technical and managerial roles. A major part of his portfolio has been WASH trainings as well as monitoring and evaluation of Austrian Red Cross WASH projects in Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Eritrea, Lebanon, Pakistan, Nepal, and Myanmar.
Before his Red Cross career, Alexander worked in the private sector in water supply and sanitation infrastructure planning and provision. He holds a Master's degree in Land and Water Management & Engineering from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.
As the Senior WASH Expert, he leads the WASH team at HQ.
WASH Focal Point for: Hygiene Promotion, Menstrual Hygiene Management, WASH & CEA, WASH & PGI, and market-based WASH programming
Julia Zeilinger
Julia is an expert in WASH and Solid Waste Management with many years of experience in the WASH sector and academia. She started with Austrian Red Cross as a volunteer in the Vienna branch in 2008 and joined the Faecal Sludge Management project of Austrian Red Cross in 2023. Julia has been a WASH training facilitator since 2014, and she was deployed in emergency and training missions in Asia and Africa.
Julia holds degrees in Environment and Bio-Resources Management from University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna and Community Water and Sanitation from Cranfield University, UK and is currently pursuing her PhD in Transitions to Sustainability. She worked at University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna as a researcher and University assistant. Her scientific focus is on circularity and resource management in temporary housing and shelter and waste prevention in relief organizations.

Tobias Janisch
Tobias is a WASH expert and civil engineer with over 10 years of experience in the WASH sector across humanitarian and development contexts. He has worked extensively in complex emergency settings across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, combining technical expertise with operational leadership. He has held positions with organisations including Médecins Sans Frontières, Action contre la Faim, IOM and UNHCR, where he set up and led WASH responses, developed operational strategies and managed programme implementation, and is a member of several WASH emergency rosters.
He has an academic background in Civil Engineering and Water Management as well as International Development. His experience covers the full project cycle, with a strong focus on emergency response, environmental health and public health engineering and strengthening WASH systems in fragile contexts. Since 2024, Tobias has been working with the Austrian Red Cross as Portfolio Manager for Ukraine and East Africa and as of 2026 as a WASH Expert.

Christopher Friedrich
Christopher is the Austrian Red Cross’ Standing Surge WASH Coordinator. Joining the Austrian Red Cross as a paramedic in 2008, he has been engaged with the WASH ERU system since 2011. He deployed to the Middle East, Southern and East Africa, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, and South Asia, leading assessments, coordinating WASH responses, facilitating trainings, and supporting partner National Societies with technical advice.
Before starting his Standing Surge position in 2024, he managed the humanitarian WASH backstopping mandate between Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, and the Swiss Development Cooperation – Humanitarian Aid Unit.
He has an academic background in environmental sciences with a water resources specialisation and extensive experience working in emergency sanitation, faecal sludge management, and capacity building through teaching and training facilitation.
Monica Heim
Monica has been working with the Austrian Red Cross since 2011 and has extensive experience in International Cooperation. Throughout her career, she has supported international deployments, worked in crisis and disaster management, and served as Executive Assistant for Nachbar in Not, the Austrian humanitarian alliance for disaster relief.
Today, she is responsible for the course management of international ERU WASH and ITT trainings and acts as the focal point for Molnix, the Austrian Red Cross personnel database used to manage volunteers and members of international deployment pools.
Marco Grüner-Skodak
Marco started his engagement in WASH as volunteer with the Vienna branch of Red Cross in 2013. Since then, he has been deployed to emergencies and training missions in Europe, Asia and Africa. He has years of experience as training facilitator, in- and outside the Austrian Red Cross.
Today he supports the WASH Team as a freelancer with the design, development, organisation and administration of trainings.
