A NEW CHAPTER FOR QUALITY CARE AND DIGNITY - THE GYUMRI CARE CENTER

The Armenian Red Cross Society (ARCS) celebrated the official opening of its newly renovated 24-hour Gyumri Care Centre, marking a significant milestone in improving long-term care services for older persons and people with disabilities in Armenia.

Since taking over the management of the facility in 2020, the Armenian Red Cross Society (ARCS) has invested over One million EUR (600 000 000 AMD) in its renovation and modernisation. The transformation was made possible through close cooperation with international partners; the  movement partners and the Austrian Development Agency.

The revived Centre accommodates 160 residents, providing comprehensive 24-hour services, including health care, psychosocial support, and safe accommodation. The renovated infrastructure features upgraded residential blocks, adapted rooms and sanitary facilities for people with mobility challenges, and newly equipped common areas to promote comfort and accessibility.

With support from the Austrian Development Agency and in partnership with the Armenian Red Cross Society, the “Working Together for Gyumri Care Centre – Next Level” project is transforming the Gyumri Care Centre into a model of quality, inclusion, and dignity.

The two-story residential block has been fully renovated, equipped with modern household items within the project, creating a safe, comfortable living space for residents. Beyond infrastructure, it focuses on empowering the people who make care possible. Through specialised trainings, peer exchanges, and team-building sessions, the staff and volunteers are strengthening their professional competencies and deepening their understanding of person-centred, respectful care. Social inclusion forms a central pillar of the initiative, encouraging residents to take an active part in community life through social events, open-door days, and collaborative activities with local Active Ageing Groups. These efforts help strengthen residents’ sense of belonging, connection, and participation in society.

By combining improved infrastructure, strengthened staff capacities, resident engagement, and sustainability, ARCS and its partners are setting a new standard for inclusive and compassionate long-term care in Armenia.
