CARE SERVICES IN WESTERN UKRAINE - A LIFELINE FOR OLDER PEOPLE

While the initial influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has subsided, the long-term impact of the conflict on older people remains significant. Many older individuals, living alone in rural areas, face isolation, limited access to healthcare, and financial hardship. The Austrian Red Cross has responded by focusing on home-based care services and community-based programs.

Home-Based Care:

  • Personalized Support: Social helpers from the Ukrainian Red Cross visit beneficiaries 2-5 times per week, providing assistance with daily tasks such as household chores, hygiene, cooking, shopping, and emotional support.
  • Mental Health Focus: The social helpers play a crucial role in addressing the mental health needs of isolated individuals, offering companionship and a listening ear.

In July 2024, in Lviv and Zakarpattia, the Ukrainian Red Cross, supported by the Austrian Red Cross, provided help to 461 people with 94 social helpers.

Active Ageing Clubs:

  • Community Engagement: With the support of the Austrian Red Cross, the Ukrainian Red Cross has introduced Active Ageing clubs to Ukraine, providing a space for older people to socialize, learn about health topics, participate in physical activities, and connect with others.
  • Empowerment and Well-being: These clubs promote active aging and contribute to the overall well-being of participants.

In Lviv, 3 clubs have been opened, with 2 receiving financial support from the Austrian Red Cross. On average, 15 people visit these clubs.

Cash and Voucher Assistance:

  • Winter Relief: To help vulnerable individuals cope with the harsh winter months, the Red Cross provides cash and voucher assistance, ensuring that they have access to essential necessities like food and heating.

In Lviv and Zakarpattia, 462 people will be financially supported throughout the winter 2024/2025.
