EARTHQUAKE IN TÜRKIYE AND SYRIA

More than 14.7 million people were affected by the earthquake, 60,000 lost their lives and millions were displaced in Türkiye alone. The TRC has provided essential humanitarian assistance to the affected population, including but not limited to the provision of over 300 million hot meals, distribution of 140,000 vouchers and more than 920,000 relief items as well as reaching almost 140,000 people with health care and psychosocial support.  However, more than three months after the devastation, millions of people continue to need support having lost their homes, livelihoods, and belongings.

The earthquake exacerbated an already critical humanitarian situation in Syria, with millions of people in need of assistance. The water infrastructure, already strained by the ongoing water scarcity crisis, suffered further damage, impacting the provision of clean water and increasing the risk of cholera outbreaks. The AutRC is focusing its relief efforts on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) response, particularly the rehabilitation of the Aleppo water network. The aging system had experienced damage and leaks, reducing its efficiency and posing a contamination risk.  AutRC will work through the Norwegian Red Cross and with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) to replace damaged pipes, restore the water supply, and provide technical training and support.

Three months later recovery efforts are ongoing. The AutRC is in discussion with the TRC and SARC on how to provide the best support regarding their recovery plans.
