RWANDA: ENHANCING COMMUNITY CLIMATE RESILIENCE (ECOCARE)

The Enhancing Community Climate Resilience (ECoCare) project strengthens the resilience of communities in Nyamasheke, Rwanda, to climate-related risks through integrated measures in disaster preparedness, sustainable livelihoods and water/sanitation e. g.:

  • Capacity building and emergency preparedness: Over 100 local actors were trained in disaster risk management and community participation; emergency response teams and a warehouse with relief supplies were set up to ensure rapid response to climate shocks.
  • Environmental and food security measures: 304,201 trees were planted, 113.9 hectares of land were rehabilitated through erosion control measures, 225 kitchen gardens were established and clean cooking technologies were distributed to 500 households, halving firewood consumption and reducing cooking time.
  • Economic empowerment: Women's cooperatives and youth groups with a total of 480 members were established and supported, generating revenues of around RWF 13.5 million from diverse income sources and promoting savings and lending to improve quality of life.
  • Water, sanitation and hygiene: 8.2 km of water pipes, storage tanks and public taps were installed, 100 latrines were built and 30 volunteers and 16 hygiene clubs were trained in sustainable hygiene practices; 56 individuals were trained in the operation and maintenance of water systems, ensuring local capacity for upkeep and functionality.
    • Sustainability and Handover: All completed water systems were formally handed over to the national water authority for long-term management, integration into national systems,
    and sustainability.
