The ambulance vehicles are used as mobile health units (MHU) which is operated by a doctor, a nurse, and a driver. These units operate in the region’s vast landscape and conflict affected areas to reach remote villages, ensuring essential medical care is available where it's most needed. Each MHU, including the vehicle provided by the Austrian Red Cross, has the capacity to do approximately 5,000 consultations per month. Remarkably, this donated MHU has been actively operating in the region for almost 2 years, demonstrating its critical role in delivering continuous healthcare to isolated communities.
The value of the AutRC's donation was highlighted during the tragic airstrike on Chernihiv city on April 17, 2024, which resulted in 17 fatalities and left 60 individuals injured. The AutRC-donated ambulance was among the four MHUs that responded immediately to the crisis. The teams provided urgent first aid and ensured swift transportation for the wounded to nearby hospitals, showcasing the pivotal role of these donated vehicles in emergency medical response.
The ongoing conflict has highlighted the acute need for increased transportation resources to deliver timely medical aid. In response, the Red Cross is focusing on strengthening its transport capacity. The ambition is not only to maintain these critical services during the crisis but also to use the vehicles, including the AutRC-donated ambulances, to transport patients to healthcare centres and hospitals. This new service will be developed jointly using the strengths of both URCS and AutRC.
