ERU Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Water is life-saving and one of the first urgent needs after any natural disaster When floods, earthquakes or epidemics strike, AutRC WASH staff and volunteers join IFRC-led missions around the world to provide critical support to communities in need. In addition to water treatment and distribution (Water Treatment Unit M15 for 15,000 people and M40 for 40,000 people), the prevention of epidemics through the provision of adequate sanitation, solid waste management and vector control (MSM20, Mass Sanitation Module for 20,000 people) is essential. Hygiene Promotion is a core element that must accompany all WASH activities.

The training of international WASH emergency delegates is carried out by the AutRC in cooperation with regional WASH branches of the AutRC. Additionally, the AutRC is in an active partnership with the German Red Cross (GerRC) and the Swedish Red Cross (SweRC). This includes joint WASH deployments and WASH trainings.

Since 2018, the AutRC has placed a special focus on delegates who have completed international WASH training (M40 and/or MSM20), offering a series of specialisation trainings.

This was necessary in order to:

  • update and develop delegates' skills; and
  • maintain an updated roster of available WASH delegates for international deployments.

After finishing one of the international WASH trainings, further specialising with help of these specialisation trainings are highly recommended and is a great advantage for international missions. It will also be taken into account in the decision making process for a deployment.

The trainings are updated regularly and if required we add a new topic.

New this year, WQiE will include a workshop on chlorination and we will hold a new training for trainers WASH ToT.

The WASH Train the Trainer (ToT) workshop is all about giving participants the know-how, skills and confidence they need to train others to deliver WASH training, workshops and campaigns. It looks at how to create engaging, impactful and sustainable learning experiences through basic and advanced techniques in instructional design, delivery and evaluation.
